A European Works Council (EWC) in Edinburgh
An EWC is a annual meeting between workers and management of a multinational company with operations within the EU. AV Department Limited is a specialist in the support of this type of congress with Simultaneous Interpretation.
Despite Brexit European Works Councils (EWCs) are making a welcome return to the UK. EWCs usually travel between the countries in which a company operates and this is why they still take place in the UK. It is a chance for all parties to discuss every aspect of company life in neutral territory. As they are planned years in advance during the Brexit process they became less common due to the uncertainty of travel arrangements. Until there was a degree of certainty the UK was a less favoured destination. Now thankfully they are returning.
At an EWC it is very likely that many of the participants speak different languages with out a common tongue. To give everyone the opportunity to understand, and to be understood, interpretation is provided. To make the best use of limited time the interpretation is provided simultaneously.
This month AVD supported an EWC in Edinburgh. 25 delegates met in an open U table arrangement furnished with push to talk microphones. The microphones provide the ‘original’ audio of the delegates speaking in English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. A team of 8 interpreters worked within 4 sound booths listening and simultaneously interpreting the proceedings in all the present languages so allowing delegates to listen, understand, and contribute to the meeting in their own mother tongue. This would allow a Spanish speaking delegate to listen to the entire congress in Spanish even though their colleagues were at various times speaking in English, French, Italian and Portuguese…
The interpreters working inside the sound attenuating booths listen to the meeting via an interpreters console. The console allows the interpreter to adjust personal listening levels and select between the original audio, or the output of a colleague (known as relaying), before adding their own interpretation to their booth’s language channel. Each language channel is then transmitted to delegates via an Infra Red (IR) Receiver. The delegate can then select their preferred language to listen too.
Also supplied was a voice raising PA, presentation display via a Barco ClickShare to allow presentations to be easily given from multiple contributors. Presentations were also relayed via monitors in the booths to the interpreters to allow them to clearly see the content.
Usually lasting 2 to 3 days delegates have an opportunity to network and build connections with out the language barrier.
